Arrival in Portghalib
Arrive at Portghalib to board your boat, after your gear begins to sail to Marsa Mubark
Enjoy the first day in Marsa Mubark
the most impressive dive site you will ever see. A sandy beach leads to a gently sloping bottom, bordered on one side by a reef wall with some corals and fish. In the middle is a patch of sea grass. But on this herbarium are the real attractions of the site: the local population of green sea turtles and the resident dugong, nicknamed Dennis.
As you enter the water, dive calmly towards the sea, keeping your eyes open for movement. Turtles are usually found munching on sea grass or on the surface when they are getting fresh air. The dugong is a bit more unpredictable, and he's a bit lucky to see it. Some people dive here several times and see it every time; others are not so lucky. Local guides can advise you on your chances and the best time to go, but generally turtles and dugongs are better spotted on morning dives rather than in the afternoon. Finish the dive along the reef to the south before returning to the beach. For the more adventurous there are a few pillars with growing corals quite far from the beach.
Please keep a reasonable distance from animals, as the dugong in particular is quite shy. If you have no idea how to behave around animals, please have a guide from one of the local dive centers.
