Oraby Fortress

One of the most important antiquities of Damietta, the Oraby fortress was built by the Crusaders after destroying another village said to have been in its place. It was intent to be used for defense and weapon storage. Because of its strategic position, it suffered from successive attacks that destroyed it repeatedly. Although it was almost completely destroyed during Napoleon's presence, the bases of the fort are still extant. During the reign of Mohammed Ali, the fortress was restored, but after the English occupation it was abandoned. According to some records, the castle was given a rectangular shape. Today, the castle is in ruins and is towers had partially collapsed.
